Adult Sunday School Classes

Sunday School Schedule

Sundays, 9:45 – 10:40 am

Map of Sunday School Rooms

Each Adult class has a unique focus and gifts. Please read about the classes and visit any that interest you! Visitors and new members are always welcome!

Contemporary Expressions (Rm 111)

CE offers a drop-in format with no preparation required. Current events, social justice, a book, Methodist worship, videos -- this class can turn any topic in to a lively discussion! No subject is out of bounds, but at the same time, all points of view are considered and respected. A great class to try out Sunday school or to return week after week. While lively and fun, CE also features great theology and mission projects. Best of all it's the only class with a Christmas barbecue in July. Drop in anytime! Contact Marc Segre.

Homebuilders (Rm 101-103)

This class of couples, primarily with teenage/college children, reads and discusses relationship and spiritual-life books. Contact Stacy Schrader.

Journey Through the Bible (Rm 117)

Join this group of men and women of all ages as they embark on a slow, thoughtful journey together through the Bible. The group is casual and enjoys diverse discussion of biblical text as it applies to today's life. They are currently studying Luke-Acts. Contact John Pare.

Living Waters (Room 119)

This class is open to all adults and currently includes several couples with young children. We enjoy fellowship and short-term Bible studies - exploring scripture and how we can apply it to our daily lives. Past lessons have included studies on Proverbs, the Parables, and troublesome Bible passages. Our lessons are independent from week to week so this is a great class for those who may also want to be involved in Children's or Youth Sunday School or can't attend every week. Contact Kelly Hodges.

Men’s Bible Study (Rm 114)

This group of men of all ages has fun while studying the Bible using the quarterly Adult Bible Study materials. These men also coordinate the semi-annual barbeque and other fellowship events for men. Contact: Kevin Manweiler.

Woman to Woman (Rm 115)

The Woman-to-Woman class offers Bible study, fellowship, support, and sharing to women of all ages and stages. Contact Vicky St. Clair.

For questions about any class: Contact Jim Galloway.

DISCIPLE Bible Study

Please see our Disciple Bible Study page.

Wednesday Morning Bible Study

This group meets in room 103 each Wednesday from 9:30–11:30 am to study the Bible and offer prayer and support for the spiritual journey.  They study books of the Bible, seasonal studies (Lent/Advent) and other Bible-based books. Contact: Sue Segre through the church office.

Evening & Seasonal Bible Studies

Pam Linke will lead a 12-week Beth Moore Bible study for women, beginning in early September, on Thursdays at 7 pm, Room 111. Beth Moore brings a dynamic, prophetic application of Daniel to bear upon our own cultural plight. Like ancient Babylon, we are wooed and even seduced by our materialistic, narcissistic culture into self-absorption with “me” and “my own.” Ladies, please join Pam for a life-changing exploration of purer commitment by ourselves & our families to Christ and unselfish Christlike discipleship.

Please check the Adult Ministries Board or newsletter for upcoming studies, or contact Jim Galloway for more information.

New Members Class

Have you recently joined Soapstone, or are you interested in exploring membership? Perhaps you would like more information about our church, its ministries, and our congregational life. If any of these fit you, plan to join us for New Members Class gatherings in the north foyer during Sunday School, 9:45-10:45 am. A new class is starting in September and classes will start periodically thereafter. Classes are led by Pastor Karen Whitaker. To register or for more information, please call the Church Office, 846-2212.

Sponsors for New Members

Soapstone is developing a Sponsor program to pair a new member household 1:1 with a similar current member household. We hope to have the Sponsor program operating by October 2008. Please contact Jim Galloway for more information.

On-Going Programs

United Methodist Women

The United Methodist Women is a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of missions through participation in the global ministries of the church. Soapstone has one Circle that meets once a month for fellowship, study, and missions:

  • The Mary Martha Circle meets the 3rd Thursdays at 10 am. Their service projects include visiting homebound members and friends and driving the Interfaith Food Shuttle. Contact Cathy Knowles at 676-9160.
  • Childcare is available for all UMW events. All women of Soapstone are welcome and invited to any Circle meeting and all UMW events (church-wide or conference-wide) held throughout the year. Contact Debbie Matthis through the church office.

United Methodist Men

All men, younger and older, are invited to participate in United Methodist Men. Meetings are held at 7:00 am on the 2nd Friday of each month in the Men’s Bible Study class in Room 114. Soapstone Men sponsor two semi-annual barbeque fundraisers each year, monthly mission work days, church breakfasts and other special events. Contact: Kevin Manweiler 676-3941.

Intercessory Prayer

The Intercessory Prayer Group prays for the needs and concerns of our church family on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm This group also coordinates a prayer chain. If you would like to be on the prayer chain or join them on Wednesday evenings, please contact Pastor Karen Whitaker at 846-2212 or Dave Park through the church office. If you have a prayer request, you may place it in the prayer request boxes located in both foyers or you may leave your confidential prayer requests on the pastor’s voicemail at 846-2212, ext. 311.

Fellowship and Caring Programs

Tuesday Lunch Crew (TLC)

TLC meets at a local restaurant for fun and fellowship the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 11:30 am. Locations are announced in the bulletin newsletter and weekly e-news. Contact the church office at 846-2212. All Soapstone friends and family are welcome!

Soapstone Sports

Fellowship, caring for our bodies, building relationships with other churches, and supporting missions are all good reasons to get involved with sports at Soapstone! Check out the Soapstone Snappers, our co-ed softball team. The Snappers have been top finishers in the church league for several years. Bikers, swimmers, runners, walkers, and tri-athletes have joined together to raise money for missions in the Race of Grace in Raleigh, the CROP WALK (Sunday, October 12, 2008), and the Mission Man Triathlon in Burlington. Members have also joined together and coordinated other sports events throughout the year. Contact Kevin Manweiler for more information.

Membership Care

Soapstone’s mission is to joyfully worship and honor Christ through Help, Healing, and Hospitality. One of the ways that we do this is through neighborhood membership care groups. Groups provide meals for one another in times of need and may gather periodically for fellowship. For more information about Membership Care or to find out about the neighborhood group in your area, contact Melodie Gillespie through the church office, 846-2212.
